NEET PG 2025
3
Only 3 functioning state medical colleges for Jharkhand state PG counselling
Jharkhand's PG infrastructure is sparse. RIMS Ranchi, PMCH Dhanbad, and MGM Jamshedpur are the primary state counselling colleges. Seat counts are low relative to the state's candidate pool. — Formity's review of JCECEB 2025 data.
RIMS
RIMS Ranchi is the only high-demand PG seat in Jharkhand — rest fill much later
Among Jharkhand state counselling institutions, RIMS Ranchi stands alone in competitiveness. Surgery and Medicine at RIMS close 8,000-12,000 ranks ahead of other JH colleges. Plan your preferences with this gap in mind.
Stray
JH domicile candidates often must wait for stray round — seats go vacant in R1/R2
Jharkhand has historically seen unfilled seats in non-RIMS colleges after R1/R2. Stray vacancy round is where those seats open up again. Patience through rounds matters here.
≠AIIMS
AIIMS Deoghar admits PG through INI-CET, a separate exam — not NEET PG, and not Jharkhand state counselling
AIIMS Deoghar, despite being in Jharkhand, is an MCC institution. A common planning error is assuming state counselling covers it. Plan AIIMS Deoghar PG through MCC timelines separately.

How counselling works for you

You are in 2 counselling processes.

  • MCC — All India Quota, DNB and NBE seats, every deemed seat. About half the seats.
  • Your state — its own state-quota seats. About the other half.

Separate registration for each. Separate dates. Separate fee.

In Jharkhand, Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB) holds your state seats — 4 rounds (Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 (Mop-Up), Stray Vacancy Round).

The steps, in order:

  1. Registration — pay the fee, create your account on the portal (MCC or your state’s).
  2. Choice filling — you rank every seat you would actually join, in the order you want it.
  3. Lock — choices close at a fixed deadline; the list is frozen, no more edits or reordering after.
  4. Allotment — the system goes straight down your list and gives you the first seat still open at your rank.
  5. Freeze or Float — accept and stop (Freeze), or stay in line for something higher while your current seat is held (Float).
  6. Report + deposit — verify documents, pay the seat deposit.
  7. Later rounds — Round 2, Round 3 (mop-up), and a stray-vacancy round fill what is left; floating carries you into the next round automatically.
  8. Upgrade / exit — you can move up in a later round, or step away — but only Round 1 lets you leave without losing the deposit.

2026 change on MCC seats: After each allotment you now choose Freeze or Float. Freeze = accept and stop: you report once at the allotted college for document verification and fee, and you’re done. Float = accept but stay in line for a higher choice: under the 2026 reform you do not report physically while floating — your provisional admission stays valid online as you take the next rounds. Upgradation is open up to Round 3; after Round 3 anyone still holding a seat reports physically to finish.

This reform is MCC’s own — it covers AIQ, deemed and central seats only. Jharkhand’s own counselling (held by JCECEB) sets its own process; check with them for how upgrades work on your state seats.

BC-I and BC-II — Not Standard OBC
Jharkhand splits OBC into BC-I (12%) and BC-II (14%). BC-I corresponds to more backward among OBC, while BC-II is the relatively less backward segment. This is similar to Bihar's system. ST at 26% is the second highest in India (after Chhattisgarh at 32%), reflecting the large tribal population (Santhal, Munda, Ho, Oraon). Combined SC/ST/BC reservation exceeds 60%.
ST 26% + BC-I 12% + BC-II 14% = tribal + backward majority

RIMS Ranchi — Jharkhand's Premier Institute
RIMS Ranchi (Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences) is a state government institute (not central/AIIMS) and Jharkhand's premier PG centre with the full range of clinical and para-clinical specialities. It draws the most competitive closing ranks. Newer GMCs at Hazaribagh, Palamu, and Dumka are adding PG seats gradually. No private medical colleges exist for PG — Jharkhand PG is entirely government.

Key Insights

CML State Merit
JCECEB uses CML (Combined Merit List) based purely on NEET PG score for state quota counselling. No separate state exam. Category reservation applies within the CML.
High Tribal Reservation
26% ST reservation means tribal candidates (Santhal, Munda, Ho, Oraon) have excellent PG access in Jharkhand. BC-I/BC-II together add another 26%. This is one of the highest combined reservation states.
Tata Main Hospital DNB
Tata Main Hospital Jamshedpur is one of India's premier corporate hospitals for DNB training. It offers clinical exposure on par with top metro hospitals, accessible via NBE counselling with no domicile restriction.
No Private PG — Govt Only
Jharkhand has no private medical colleges for PG. All MD/MS seats are at government colleges only. RIMS Ranchi (state govt, not central) dominates, with newer GMCs still building PG capacity. DNB seats at hospitals like Tata Main are the only non-government option.
