The National Medical Commission (NMC) released the official MBBS Seat Matrix for Academic Year 2026–27 on 14 July 2026. This is the authoritative document that every counselling committee — MCC, state governments — must use for admissions. Here is the complete, verified breakdown of every new college and every seat increase approved this year.
Source: NMC MARB Public Notice No. U-15029/09/2025-UGMEB dated 14-07-2026. Subject to revision based on Appeal Committee decisions.
The Headline Numbers
| Category | New Colleges | New Seats | Seat Increase Colleges | Extra Seats Added | Total New Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Government | 7 | 400 | 41 | +1,711 | 2,111 |
| Private | 18 | 2,000 | 88 | +5,800 | 7,800 |
| Deemed | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 |
| TOTAL | 25 | 2,400 | 129 | +7,511 | 9,911 |
The most surprising finding: zero Deemed university colleges appear in either the new establishment or seat increase categories for 2026–27. All expansion this year is in Government and Private colleges.
Key Facts Before You Read the Lists
- All Private colleges granted approval must furnish an Electronic Bank Guarantee (EBG) within 7 days of this notice. Letter of Permission (LoP) is issued only after EBG is received and found in order.
- The Seat Matrix is subject to revision based on Appeal Committee decisions. Always check the NMC website before counselling.
- No counselling committee can admit students beyond the approved seat count. Any excess admission is a violation of the NMC Act 2019.
- If you spot a discrepancy, refer it to NMC MARB — do not assume the higher number.

What Does This Mean for NEET Counselling 2026?
More Seats = More Options, But Not Equally Distributed
9,911 new seats sounds like a lot. But most of them are in Private colleges (7,800 out of 9,911). The government seat increase of 2,111 is more significant for most aspirants, but it is spread across 48 colleges in 19 states — meaning no single state gets a dramatic jump in government seats.
Karnataka: The State With the Most Activity
Karnataka had 14 private colleges receive seat increases — more than any other state. Combined with 2 new private colleges (ALVA'S and Chettinad), Karnataka adds significant private MBBS capacity in 2026–27. This matters for KEA counselling (state quota) and for All India Quota seats.
Chhattisgarh: The Government Expansion Story
Five of seven new government colleges are in Chhattisgarh — all starting at 50 seats each. This is a deliberate push to bring medical infrastructure to districts like Dantewada, Janjgir-Champa, Jashpur-Kunkuri, Kabeerdham, and Manendragarh. These will be Chhattisgarh state quota seats.
No Deemed Expansion — Unusual
For the first time in recent years, zero Deemed university colleges appear in either new establishment or seat increase approvals. Deemed colleges are usually the most active in seeking seat increases. This could reflect NMC's stricter regulatory posture on Deemed institutions, or it could mean their applications are pending with the Appeal Committee.
Colleges Jumping to 250
Many colleges — both government and private — have been approved to go up to 250 seats, which is the current NMC cap for a single medical college. Notable examples include Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi (+70 to reach 250), and multiple Karnataka private colleges now at 250.
How to Use This List Before Counselling
- Check if your target college is on this list. If a college you were considering has increased seats, the cutoff rank may ease slightly — more seats from the same applicant pool means the last seat goes to a lower rank.
- New colleges start without historical cutoffs. For 25 new colleges, there is no 2025 or 2024 cutoff to reference. Their first year cutoffs are genuinely unknown — some will fill at high ranks (aspirants exploring), others may go late. Plan for this uncertainty.
- Verify before choice-filling. The seat matrix is subject to revision. Check the NMC website and MCC/state counselling portals for the final seat matrix before you submit your choice list.
- EBG status matters for new Private colleges. A Private college's seats become real only after NMC issues the Letter of Permission (LoP), which happens after they submit the Electronic Bank Guarantee. If a college has not received its LoP by the time counselling starts, its seats may not be available.
If you want to see which of these colleges fall within your reach — based on your actual NEET rank and category — use Formity's mock counselling to build your choice list the way a real counsellor would.
