EBC (18%) + RCG (3%): Bihar's Unique Categories
Bihar splits OBC into BC (12%) and EBC (18%) — EBC is the largest reserved category in the state. RCG (Residual Category of General, 3%) is unique to Bihar: it's for unreserved candidates whose family income is above EWS threshold but who still need targeted support. These categories significantly reduce the UR pool — only ~27% seats are truly unreserved.

PMCH vs IGIMS: Two Different Worlds
PMCH Patna (42 seats, rank 191) is Bihar's largest PG centre — charges just Rs 9,000/year (among the cheapest in India). IGIMS Patna (19 seats, rank 788) is autonomous with a higher fee of Rs 1.6L/year but better infrastructure and Rs 1.23L/month stipend. Darbhanga (31 seats, rank 2,711) and Nalanda (21 seats, rank 2,283) complete Bihar's "Big 4" government PG centres.
Rs 9,000/year fee = cheapest PG in India

Bihar's Growing DNB Network
Bihar's DNB ecosystem is Patna-centric. Jayprabha Medanta and Paras HMRI lead with 9 seats each. Mahavir Cancer Sansthan is the go-to for oncology DNB. The ESIC MC Bihta (7 seats, rank 6,597) operates under central govt rules with its own fee and bond structure. Bihar DNB is a solid option at 2,700-6,500 ranks for non-domicile candidates.
Section 6

Fee, Stipend & Bond

Rs 9,000
Govt Fee / Year
PMCH, Darbhanga, Nalanda, Bhagalpur, AN Magadh, Sri Krishna — all charge just Rs 9,000/year. IGIMS is the exception at Rs 1.6L/year (autonomous).
Rs 82,000
Govt Stipend / Month
Standardized at Rs 82,000/month across all state government colleges. IGIMS pays Rs 1.23L/month. Bihar's low cost of living makes this more than adequate.
Rs 25L
Bond Penalty
2-year compulsory rural service bond at Rs 25L for all state government PG seats. One of the heavier bonds among Indian states. IGIMS may have different terms.
2 Years
Service Period
Serve in Bihar's rural/underserved districts for 2 years post-PG. This is significant — plan your super-speciality timeline around the 2-year commitment.
Rs 9K Fee + Rs 25L Bond Tradeoff
Bihar offers India's cheapest PG fees (Rs 9,000/year) but also one of the heavier bonds (Rs 25L / 2 years). The net financial calculation: you save ~Rs 3-4L on fees over 3 years but commit to 2 years of rural service worth ~Rs 20L+ in opportunity cost. For those planning super-speciality, the 2-year bond delays your DM/MCh by 2 years. Factor this into your decision.

Key Insights

BCECEB Counselling
BCECEB conducts Bihar PG counselling in 2-3 rounds. Web option entry with auto-allotment. Bihar is among the few states where PG counselling is entirely online without physical reporting for initial rounds.
IGIMS: The Premium Choice
IGIMS Patna is Bihar's only autonomous government PG institute. Higher fee (Rs 1.6L vs Rs 9K) but better infrastructure, higher stipend (Rs 1.23L), and more research opportunities. 19 seats across 20 specialities.
Para-clinical Training Hub
Bihar's top DNB specialities by seat count are DCH (18) and DGO (15) — diploma seats are popular. Government colleges also have strong Physiology (9), Pharmacology (8) seats for para-clinical PG.
Non-Domicile Access
Non-domicile candidates access Bihar through AIQ (rank 191+) or DNB (rank 2,700+). State quota is domicile-only. PMCH under AIQ is competitive — closes at rank 191 for the best speciality.
