Section 1

Counselling Structure

DME Assam conducts state quota PG counselling. Entirely government colleges — no private PG medical colleges in Assam.

50% of government seats. MD/MS at GMCH Guwahati, AMCH Dibrugarh, SMCH Silchar, JMCH Jorhat, TMCH Tezpur, FAAMCH Barpeta.
Eligibility: Assam domicile. NEET PG qualified. Category reservation with Tea Garden Labour (TGL) unique quota.
AIQ
All India Quota
50% of government seats under MCC counselling. Open to all India.
Eligibility: Any NEET PG qualified candidate. No domicile restriction.
DNB
DNB / NBE Diploma
Limited DNB seats at mission/government hospitals. Counselled by NBE. No private medical colleges.
Eligibility: All India — no domicile restriction for DNB.

Tea Garden Labour
Tea Garden Labour (TGL) — Unique to Assam
Assam is the only state with a Tea Garden Labour (TGL) reservation in PG medical admissions. Descendants of tea garden workers get dedicated seats. The ST(H)/ST(P) split is also unique — Plains Tribes (Bodo, Mising, Rabha) and Hills Tribes (Karbi, Dimasa) have separate reservation buckets. MOBC (More Other Backward Classes) at 27% is equivalent to OBC in other states but uses Assam-specific OBC list.

GMCH Guwahati — Northeast's Premier PG Hub
Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) is the largest and most competitive PG institute in the entire Northeast. It offers the widest range of specialities and attracts the best ranks. AMCH Dibrugarh is the second largest, especially strong in surgery and medicine. SMCH Silchar serves the Barak Valley. Newer colleges at Tezpur, Jorhat, Barpeta, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar are expanding PG capacity rapidly.

Key Insights

Entirely Government
Assam has no private PG medical colleges at all. All PG training is through government colleges. DNB seats exist at a few mission/government hospitals via NBE. This means extremely affordable PG education for domicile candidates.
Northeast Hub
GMCH Guwahati serves as the referral centre for the entire Northeast. Getting PG at GMCH gives exposure to cases from 8 states. Clinical volume and diversity is exceptional for a government college.
ST(H) vs ST(P) Matters
Plains Tribes (10%) and Hills Tribes (5%) have separate reservation buckets. A Bodo candidate (Plains) cannot claim Hills reservation and vice versa. Always verify your specific tribal classification.
Expanding PG Capacity
Newer GMCs at Kokrajhar (JMCH), Nagaon, Dhubri, Lakhimpur are adding PG seats. These close at higher ranks and offer an entry point for domicile candidates who miss GMCH/AMCH.
