Understanding NEET PG

MD vs MS vs DNB vs Diploma — what's the difference?
MD (Doctor of Medicine) — 3-year postgraduate degree in non-surgical specialities like Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology. Qualifies for teaching posts.
MS (Master of Surgery) — 3-year postgraduate degree in surgical specialities like General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT. Also qualifies for teaching.
DNB (Diplomate of National Board) — 3-year degree awarded by NBE, considered equivalent to MD/MS. Conducted at accredited hospitals including corporate ones.
Diploma — 2-year postgraduate qualification. Shorter but does not qualify for teaching positions or direct super-speciality entry.
How does NEET PG counselling differ from UG?
NEET PG is out of 800 marks (vs 720 for UG). The All India Quota (AIQ) is 50% of government seats (vs 15% in UG). DNB seats are allotted separately through DGHS. Many states have bond policies requiring 2-5 years of rural service. Deemed universities conduct their own counselling. The competition is intense — around 2.3 lakh candidates compete for ~45,000 PG seats annually.
How should I choose a speciality?
Consider these factors when choosing your speciality:
  • Interest and aptitude — You'll spend 3+ years and your career in this field
  • Competitiveness — Dermatology, Radiology, and Orthopaedics have the toughest cutoffs
  • Future scope — Some branches have better super-speciality pathways
  • Work-life balance — Surgical branches demand longer hours than clinical ones
  • Bond and service obligations — Factor in 2-5 year bonds when planning
What rank do I need for a government PG seat?
It depends heavily on the speciality. As a rough guide for General category under AIQ:
  • Top 5,000 — Competitive clinical branches (Dermatology, Radiology, Orthopaedics)
  • Top 15,000-20,000 — Popular branches (Medicine, Paediatrics, OBG)
  • Top 50,000 — Less competitive branches and smaller states
  • 50,000-80,000+ — Deemed universities, DNB seats, and diploma courses
Reserved categories get seats at higher rank numbers. Use the PG College Predictor for personalized results.

How the NEET PG Rank Predictor Works

Formity's NEET PG Rank Predictor uses 5 years of official NBEMS score-to-rank data (2021-2025) to estimate your All India Rank. NEET PG is scored out of 800 marks with 200 MCQs, each carrying 4 marks. The exam has no negative marking since 2023, which shifted the score distribution significantly — the predictor accounts for this by weighting recent years more heavily.

Approximately 2.3 lakh doctors appear for NEET PG annually, competing for around 45,000 MD/MS/DNB/Diploma seats. The All India Quota (AIQ) covers 50% of government college seats — significantly more than UG's 15%. This makes AIQ counselling especially important for PG aspirants. The remaining 50% goes to state quotas, with separate counselling processes in each state.

After checking your predicted rank, use the PG College Predictor to find matching seats by speciality, degree type, and state. For branch-specific insights, explore our state counselling guides which include PG seat counts and cutoff data.
