How to Compare Colleges

Which metrics matter most?
When comparing colleges, prioritize in this order:
  1. Cutoff rank — Can you actually get in? This is the starting point
  2. College type — Government colleges offer lower fees and often better clinical exposure
  3. Total cost — Multiply annual fee by 5 years. The difference between government and private can be Rs 50L+
  4. NIRF ranking — Reflects institutional quality, research, and placements
  5. Location — City infrastructure, safety, proximity to home
  6. Hospital infrastructure — Bed count and OPD volume directly impact your clinical training
Common comparison mistakes to avoid
  • Don't choose on city alone — A top government college in a smaller city is often better than a private college in a metro
  • Factor total cost, not just annual fee — Hostel, food, books, and living expenses add up. A Rs 20K/year government college costs ~Rs 1L total vs Rs 1Cr+ at some private ones
  • Don't compare government and private cutoffs directly — They come from different counselling processes. A rank of #50,000 in AIQ is very different from #50,000 in a private college's management quota
  • Don't ignore established year — Older colleges typically have better clinical training infrastructure and alumni networks
